Walks January - March 2008 Sunday 6 January 2008 - Kenilworth and the surrounds Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: A pleasant and not too energetic 7.5 mile walk, to start the year off, over farmland, the Berkswell Greenway and Abbey Fields. Start Point: Parking at Castle Brays Car Park (inside the Castle grounds (NOT opposite the Pub) as there's more space) Grid Ref SP 280 720 Click here for start point map Leader: Michael Potter Sunday 13 January 2008 (CHANGED)- Caer Caradoc and the Long Mynd Grade: M2 (explained here) Info: 10.5 mile hike over access land on Caer Caradoc and the Long Mynd hopefully with Panaramic views to the Malverns and the Wrekin, the Breacon Beacons and Cadar Idris. The walk heads across fields up to Burnhill to join the Cotswald way, with great views of Broadway tower and the surrounding countryside; approximately 8 miles in length: Start Point: 10:30am Shear House Car Park Broadway (under the arch entrance) on the Leamington Rd (off the A44) Click here for start point map Leader: Don Smyth Sunday 27th January 2008 - Combrook - Compton Verney - Lighthorne Grade: M (explained here) Info: Starting at the church in Combrook this 9.5 mile country walk taking in the village of Lighthorne is competely rural though Warwichshire farm land with good views of Compton Verney Start Point: 10:30am Combrook church Click here for start point map Leader: Darren Moran Sunday 3rd February 2008 - Burton Dassett into Fenny Compton Grade: M2 (explained here) Info: This 7 mile undulating walk in the Burton Dassett hills runs mainly along field paths and farm tracks which can be very muddy in wet conditions so please bring appropriate footwear. We head out to Northend before turning south east through flat, easy countryside towards Fenny Compton. From there, we gain height until we reach the viewing point at Hall's Hill, followed by Windmill Hill. Farnborough is the halfway point, where the Butcher's Arms pub beckons (if open)! Our return leg takes us via Avon Dassett to Burton Dassett and the fabulous views from Magpie Hill. More Info Start Point: Outside the Vistors centre, SP 402 795 Directions: off the B4027, Brinklow Road , Binley, to the east of Coventry. Car Parking is Pay-and-display. Click here for start point map Leader: Mark Flinders Sunday 17th February 2008 - Hockley Heath, Packwood & Lapworth Circular Walk Grade: M1(explained here) Info: Easy 8 mile walking over established footpaths and towpaths. May be muddy in places but generally firm. Starting point / Parking: Village Hall Car Park on the Old Warwick Road, Hockley Heath which is opposite the Jaguar Garage (now closed down). Hockley Heath lies on the A3400, 4 miles north of Henley in Arden. Start Point: Click here for start point map Leader: Karen Mumford Sunday 24th February 2008 - Harbury to Southam (UPDATED) Grade: M1 (explained here) Info: An easy 8 mile walk from Harbury to Southam then on to Ladbroke where there is an optional pub stop before returning via Bishops Itchington Start Point:Harbury Village Hall car park. The car park is to the rear of the hall accessed from Constance Drive off South Parade. Click here for start point map Leader: Clive Taylor Saturday March 1st 2008 - Kinder's Edges (Peak District Weekend) Grade: D2/3 (explained here) Info: The Kinder Edges from Edale (or YHA), 18 miles (this is not a typo!), 1030 meters of accent over the distance. Grade: moderate to hard. This is a complete traverse of Kinder's Edges. Fall out options are available through open access land, please bring map and compass if possible (just incase). 9:00 AM sharp start. Please bring torches incase light fades towards end. Waterproof boots and clothing a must due to terrain. Grade: moderate. Options available to make walk longer if desired. Start Point: Click here for start point map Leader: Michael Potter Sunday 9th March 2008 - Shakespeare's Forest of Aden Grade: M1 (explained here) Info: Following the Heart of England Way and a stretch of the Stratford-Upon Avon Canal this 8 miles route takes you into the heart of Shakespear's Warwickshire. Don't forget to have an ice cream on your return to Henley. Start Point: 10:30am Please park in the free car park (behind the main high street at the end of Prince Harry Road off Warwick Road (A4189) the turning near the Ford Garage Click here for start point map Leader: Sunday 16th March 2008 - Bledington, Westcote and Icomb (updated) Grade: M1 (explained here) Info: 10 miles This walk,in the gentle terrain of the Evenlode valley near the Oxfordshire-Gloucestershire border, explores some of the quieter and less well known villages of the Cotswolds. There are broad and extensive views over the countryside. The walking is moderate with few gradients. Heading south out of Ratley we head down past Upton house (1695) and onto Sunrising Hill woodland. We then turn north and past Wescote manor along St John's Lane and round past the Castle inn (pub with tower) before returning to Ratley (approx 8 miles).
