Walks July - September 2008 Sunday 6th July 2008 - Shipston-on-Stour - Todenham - Stretton-on-Fosse Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: Starting at the main public car park in Shipston (on the B4034 by the river) this 8.5 mile route takes in Todenham and Stretton-on-Fosse and hopefully a pub!. (NOTE THE 11AM START) Start Point: 11am Click here for start point map Leader:Steve Bick Sunday 20th July 2008 - Radway, to Ratley, Arlescote, Ratley, Castle Inn and then Radway. Grade: E2(explained here) Info: A 9km hilly walk from Radway, up Edge Hill and through Castle Wood, taking in Ratley village, Arlecote Woods and the hamlet of Arlescote itslef, before returing to the Castle Inn with it's mock-mediaval tower perched above Castle Woods with fine views over the Warwickshire countryside. Start Point: 10:30am The bus stop adjacent the telephone box in the centre of Radway. Parking is limited in the village. Can people ensure they car share and park responsibly in the village, not all in the same place, and walk to the start point. If we start at 1030 we should be at the Castle Inn by 1430 for a drink, and Radway is then a short 15 min down hill stroll (to the cars). Click here for start point map Leader: Dave White Thursday 24th July 2008 - Kenilworth Castle Evening Walk Grade: E1(explained here) Info: The 4mile walk starts from Kenilworth Castle car park and heads off west in the direction of Honiley before returning via Chase Woods.The walk should take about 1.5hrs, and there will be time afterwards for drinks at the Queen and Castle or the Clarendon Arms, depending on numbers. Please be aware that Warwick Road (the A452) is shut and there is adiversion in place for anyone approaching Kenilworth from Leamingtonor the A46. Walk includes parkland of Wroxall Abbey, fields and the Grand Union Canal. Start Point: 10:30am Forestry Commision's Hay Wood car park, off Hay Wood Lane Click here for start point map Leader:Karen Mumford Sunday 10th August 2008 - Long Itchington - Stockton Locks - Bascote Locks Grade: E1(explained here) Info: A leisurely 7-8 mile walk from the interesting village of Long Itchington, taking in a lengthy stretch of the Grand Union Canal from the Stockton Locks, continuing along to pass the Bascote flight. Enjoy viewing boaters happily cruise their craft on their slow, unhurried journeys, before leaving for a bridleway, enclosed by trees. A single-track road amidst lovely country scenes is followed by field-paths back to Long Itchington. There will be a sandwich stop for those who have brought packed lunches about half way round, near the Welsh Road locks (bridge No. 30) and a pub stop at the end in Long Itchington, probably the Buck & Bell. Start Point: 10:30am Village Hall Cottages car park in Long Itchington, at the junction of the Leamington Road and the A423. There is limited car parking here, else please park responsibly in the village. Please car share where possible. The group accomodation booked at the YHA is now full. Park in Welford on Avon, by the maypole and triangular green at the south end of the village. Pub stop at the end. Please car share as there is limited parking Leader: Heather McEntee Sunday 7th September 2008 - Ilmington and Ebrington Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: 7 miles. A leisurely walk crossing the Warwickshire-Gloucestershire border, linking the pretty villages of Ilmington and Ebrington. The walk starts in Ilmington and takes us past Foxcote House to Ebrington, where there is a village green and pub at about the half way point (ideal spot for lunch break). After stopping for lunch the walk will take us past the highest point in Warwickshire with amazing views over the Avon valley and Edge Hill. We will then join the Centenary Way and head back to Ilmington. All ascents and descents are easy and gradual. The walk finishes back in Ilmington where there are a couple of pubs to choose from! Start Point: 10:30am Parking should be available at the Ilmington Playing fields Sports and Social club on Mickleton Road. If approaching from Armscote turn right as you enter Ilmington (signposted Stratford/Mickleton/Admington), then left (signposted Admington/Mickleton). Stay on this road - Ilmington Sports and Social club is on the left hand side. If approaching on the Stratford Road, turn right onto Mickleton Road (signposted Admington/Mickleton); stay on this road - Ilmington Sports and Social club is on the left hand side. Please car share where possible. Leader: Gillian and Sara Sunday 14th September 2008 - Malverns Challenge 2008 Grade: D2 (explained here) Info: Walking end to end, over all the peaks that make up the Malverns, this 13.5 mile route takes you over glorous hills (3670 ft of acent) with great views (walking in reverse to last year). Meet at North end car park. Drop out points available with bus service back to cars via pub in Great Malvern Start Point: 10:30am Click here for start point map Leader: Michael Potter Sunday 21st September 2008 - Step on the Roaches - Peak District (south) Grade: D1-2 Strenuous(explained here) Info: Beautifully situated between Leek and Macclesfield on the edge of the White Peak, the famous Staffordshire gritstone edge known as The Roaches has attracted generation-after-generation of climbers. And its obvious why: with hundreds of single-pitch routes to test every level of ability, and relatively easy access, a visit heres a must. But The Roaches, and adjacent Hen Cloud, arent simply the preserve of climbers theres plenty of quality walking in the area and the view from the top of the crag is simply superb. Throw in a couple of quality pubs along the way, plus a secluded tearoom, and youve got the makings of a top day out. Start Point: 10am Leek Tourist Information Centre. You will need to leave Leamington very soon after 8am to make this. Please let me know if you are coming so we can arrange car shares.
