Walks April - June* 2006 *Plus July cycling weekend Sunday 23rd April - Bibury to Calcot - Cotswolds Grade: Easy Info: 8 Miles. This walk passes through the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds with its rich farmland, stone walls and attractive farms. The walk starts at the beautiful village of Bibury with its well-known row of weavers` cottages, water mill and river.. Start Point: 10.30am. A small car park lies close to Arlington Mill otherwise parking is allowed all along the main road adjacent to the river at Bibury. Leader: Andrew Kennard Sunday 30th April - Brailes Hill Walk Cotswolds Grade: Moderate Info: 10 Miles. A hill walk taking in stunning views of Warwickshire passing through several attractive Cotswold villages and woodland. Start Point: 10.30am. Whichford, 23 miles south of Warwick, best approached from the A3400. Just before reaching Long Comptom turn off following signs to Whichford. Parking at Whichford Wood just before village centre. Leader: Michael Potter Sunday 7th May - Church Stretton Grade: Moderate/Difficult Info: 10 miles. From the car park it's up the Jack Mytton Way, then to Pole Bank, along the Long Mynd and down via Minton Hill. Start Point:10:30am. Start point will be the national trust car park at the foot of the Jack Mytton way, just outside Church Stretton (note correction from printed programme) Leader: Kate Clark Saturday 13th May - Edge Hill Grade: Easy Info: 6.5 miles, including Edge Hill. Optional pub stop towards the end. Start Point: 10.00am, Radway, on road near bus shelter / T junction (very limited parking so please lift share if possible) . Leader:Rachel Williams Sunday Charity Dragon Boat Race , 14th May Expected 9am - 4pm Info: Location: River Avon in Stratford11 people (10 rowers, 1 drummer!) required to crew and race a 30ft Hong Kong style Dragon Boat on the river Avon. Take part in threeheats racing against other crews, with the fastest teams going through to the finals. Or for the less energetic (or crazy) just bring along a picnic and a bottle of wine and cheer on the team! If interested please let me know early due to limited spaces and popularity of the event (Approx £10-12 per person plus sponsorship) Contact Mark Roach Sunday 21st May - Burton Dassett Country Park - (its villages and hills) Grade: Easy Info: 7 miles The route should offer good views and pretty villagesincluding Fenny Compton and Avon Dassett. Start Point: 10.30am, Burton Dassett Country Park Car Park (there is a small charge) Leader: Mark and Carminha Flinders Sunday 28th May Chedworth and Withington - Cotswolds Grade: Medium Info: 9 miles, Walk through woodland on the western slope of the Coln valley, passing one of the most compelte Roman villas in Britain. There is fine scenary and plaesent woodland along with attractive villages Start Point: 10.30am, Disused airfield approx 1 mile north-west of Chedworth. Turn off Chedworth-Withington road along road to Compton Abdale and part ¼ mile along by right hand bend Leader: Steve Bick Sunday 4th June - Welcombe Hills and Snitterfield Grade: Easy Info: 7 miles The gentle slopes of the Welcome Hills, now a country park, rise to around 365ft above the Avon valley, north-east of Stratford-upon-Avon and provide fine views across the valley to the line of the Cotswolds on the horizon. The walk follows the River Avon later heading up through Snitterfield and the local orchards and on to the Welcome Hills. Start Point:10:30am at the Welcombe Hills car park on Ingon Lane about ¼ mile off the A439. Landranger 151, Pathfinder 998 Leader: Jayne Clark Sunday 11th June - Painswick, Gloucestershire Grade: Moderate Info: 8 miles, Varied South Cotswolds walk including hills, valleys, villages and extensive views. Start Point:11:00am Painswick, car park ( small fee ) near library just off main road Grid Reference SO 865094 Leader: Rachel Roberts Weekend Away in the Lake District 16th - 18th June - Ambleside Info: Plan to travel up on Friday morning, stay in B&B's and take in some fantastic scenery of the Lake District. Friday 16th June - Medium ½ day walk in the afternoon Saturday 17th June - Difficult Mountain day walk Sunday 18th June - Easy/Medium day walk Leader: Steve Tuesday 20th June Evening Walk - Warwick Grade: Easy Info: 3.5 miles (can be extended to 6 miles). Lovely route fromSaxon Mill to Milverton, alongside the River Avon and returning via the Grand Union Canal towpath. Start Point:7.00pm, Saxon Mill Pub/Restaurant car park The Saxon Mill is on the A429 near Warwick.There will be an optional pub stop afterwards (you'll need clean shoes). Leader: Karen Lewis Sunday 26th June - Crickley Hill and Cheltenham Grade: Moderate Info: 10-12 miles - A walk near the western edge of the Cotswolds. The route passes the Devils Chimney rock formation. There are extensive views over Cheltenham and Gloucester, to the Malverns and beyond on clear days Start Point:10:30am, Crickley Hill Country Park Visitors Car Park. Grid ref SO929162 (Explorer 179). Travelling south on the A46 beyond Cheltenham turn left onto the A417, at the first roundabout take the first exit onto the A436 and shortly after left onto a minor road. Access to the Park is approx 150 metres on the left.
