Walks April - June 2008 Sunday 6 April 2008 - Warwick Racecourse to Hatton Locks Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: An easy and relatively flat walk through Warwickshires countryside taking in the Hatton Locks on the Grand Union Canal.. No pub stop until end, so bring food. Start Point: 10:30am Meet at Warwick Racecouse car park Click here for start point map Leader: Paul Thornton Sunday April 13th 2008 - Lower Brailes to Whichford. Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: The walk is 8 miles long starting at a layby about 2 miles east of Lower Brailes on the B4035. Just East of Gallow Hill Farm on the map. The walk follows parts of the MacMillan Way and the plan is to stop at the pub in Whichford which is about half way around. There are some slight gradients but no really steep inclines. Start Point: 10:30am The layby is on the south side of the B4035 and is big enough for plenty of cars. Click here for start point map Leader: Matt Dutton Sunday April 20th 2008 - Wormleighton and the surrounds Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: 8miles Starting at the Church in Wormleighton, a village to the south of Southam (South east of Leamimgton), this is a relatively flat figure of eright walk to Priors Hardwick taking in parts of the Oxford Canal. Grade: M2 (explained here) Info: 11miles Starting in Stanton this route takes you into the heart of the Cotswold just below Broadway taking in the villages of Stanway and Stumps Cross. Start Point: 10:30am Park in the Village Club car park (past the Sports Club car park on your left) on the right hand side of the road as you approach Stanton from the North (and pay the fee if they've fixed the collecting box) Click here for start point map Leader: David & Sarah Sunday May 4th 2008 - Broadway, Dover's Hill & Chipping Campden Grade: M1 (explained here) Info: 11miles Taking in Boadway Tower and Dover Hill this route lets you explore traditional Cotswold countryside at its finest. Start Point: 10:30am Shear House Car Park Broadway (under the arch entrance) on the Leamington Rd (off the A44) (please note there is more than one car park in Broadway - we are parking in the long stay and Pay & Display with toilets) Click here for start point map Leader: Paul Thornton Sunday May 11th 2008 - Winchcombe, Hailes Abbey & Sudeley Castle Walk Grade: M1 (explained here) Info: An 8.5 mile route over undulating terrain around the Winchcombe area taking in some historic sites. Start Point: 10:30am Free -Back Lane - car park, off Back Lane in Winchcombe. Back Lane comes off a bend of the B4078 in the town centre Click here for start point map Leader: James D'Alessandro Sunday May 18th 2008 - Wroxham Grade: M1(explained here) Info: 9 miles starting at Wroxton, walk south to Broughton Castle, which is a picturesque stately home with a moat. Return via the Giant's cave, passing Wroxton Abbey. Pub at the end, but please bring packed lunch. Please park considerately in the village. Two walks, a tour of the gorge and return home via Bath walking tour. Due to popular demand I am afraid this trip is now closed apart from one female dorm bed. Start Point: Cheddar Leader: Andrew Kennard (a.kennard@btinternet.com) Sunday June 1st 2008 - Napton on the Hill and the Canal Grade: M1 (explained here) Info: This 9 mile figure of eight walk starts from the beautiful village of Napton on the Hill, which is dominated by a fine landmark windmill. We walk past the windmill and descend to the Napton Bridge Inn, by the Grand Union canal, into beautiful countryside. After passing the marinas along the canal and the Napton reservoirs, the route climbs back up the hill top and descends southwards to Marston Doles. The walk concludes with a fine view of the windmill from the towpath, passing the Folly Inn on the return to Napton on the Hill. Please car share. Start Point: 10:30am St Lawrence's church car park (on road) in Napton on the Hill Click here for start point map Leader: Kathryn Dalgleish Friday 6th June to Sunday 8th June - Weekend away in the Lakes Grade: D2 (explained here) Info: A 2 ½ day walk along the Central and eastern Fells, a total of 31miles. Spread over three days, we start on Friday afternoon at Haweswater carpark at 2pm and walk 5 ½ m to the Kirkstone pass Inn via High St for a night in their Bunk House. Then on Sat 10m to Patterdale YHA via Fairfield and St Sunday Crag. Sunday 15 ½ m back to Haweswater via Ullswater ferry and a steep walk over Kidsey Pike. Places limited to 10 due to Bunkhouse, please book by 1st May. Start Point: 2pm Haweswater carpark Leader: Steve Bick Sunday June 15th 2008 - Somerton - The Heyfords Grade: E1 (explained here) Info: 8 miles Starting at the church in Somerton this route take in the Oxford Canal and the Heyfords. The Heyfords are picturesque villages lying alongside the Southern Oxford Canal, full of interest and charm. Start Point: 10:30am Somerton church Click here for start point map Leader: Darren Moran Saturday June 21st 2008 - If Heaven Were a Bike Ride...This Would Be It! Grade: M2 (explained here) Info: This 30 mile cycle takes us along quiet, undulating country lanes through the villages of Bishop's Itchington, Knightcote and Northend before we ascend the steep hill of the Burton Dassett country park (you will be able to walk up if you need to!). Weather permitting, we will have our lunch stop at the top of the hill taking in the fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. The return journey passes through Fenny Compton, and forks right of Knightcote along deserted lanes to the east of Bishop's Itchington before entering Harbury, where a pit-stop at the pub beckons! We then cycle past Upton, along the Centenary Way (a bit off gentle off-roading) before we hit the canal tow-path that takes us back into Leamington Spa and back to the start point. Estimated time (including time for lunch/pub stops ... and the inevitable punctures and breakdowns): 5 - 6 hours. N.B. Please bring a spare inner tube (as well as a puncture repair kit) if possible to speed up your puncture repairs! N.B. Weather permitting!! We have booked an 8 to 10 person self catering chalet within the grounds of an outdoor activity centre a few miles from the trails. We will drive down on Friday night and the ride different trails on the Saturday and Sunday, ride time will be between 4 and 7 hrs each day. For those that came to Cannock Chase with us last year, it will be a bit more adventurous as the trails are longer and a bit more technical. You will need a mountain bike set up for "off road", helmet and gloves. It might get muddy and you will feel a bit "shaken and stirred" but it will take days for the smile to wear off.
